PSALMS 104 “Benedic, anima mea, Domino”
〜 For thee SSA choirs a cappella 〜
Music by Teruaki SUZUKI
Latin Liturgical Text
Origin:
Composed as a commissioned work to commemorate the Seisen Jogakuin Music Club’s victory in the 49th Segitzei International Choral Competition (Contemporary Music Division). It was written immediately after the completion of “PSALMUS” (published by Ongaku-no-tomo-sha), a work based on the Psalms of the Old Testament, which had been commissioned by the school over the previous three years, and also uses part of Psalm 104 as its text.
Features:
The work was commissioned in commemoration of the anniversary and was created with an awareness of the festive elements of the music. In particular, the composition of three groups was planned with the assumption that each group would be placed at three points on the stage (left, right, and the terrace at the rear of the second floor), enveloping the entire venue in a whirlpool of sound. The music is based on the idea that the entire piece will be sung in a fanfare-like high pitch, with the three chorus groups echoing and echoing each other, spiraling up to the exaltation of the Alleluia.
